10 Things To A Green Business Online
The mere fact that we are doing business online is already a clear indication that we are going green.
Doing business online means doing things paperless. Just imagine the number of trees spared from cutting due to the less demand in actual paperwork like printing, photocopying, mailing, and filing as we have been accustomed to in a traditional business set-up.
Online, we store everything in the computer. We can go around sending and receiving documents that were scanned and sent to us/received by us via email. And it’s all stored and filed away for easy access whenever we need it. The challenging part, though, is keeping track of all these files. But, it’s all a matter of organization and deserves an entirely different post altogether!
But, How Green Are You In
Your Internet Business?
In an era where doing business online is not just enough; we have to do our bit of social responsibility in making sure we also help the environment for the common social good. In the first place, we live in a global village and we look out for one another.
Your internet business, although paperless, runs on energy. To begin with, you turn on the lights, the computer, and the airconditioning unit or heater when you work. Then, you could probably be turning on the TV or the radio and charging not one but two of your phones and other gadgets, too!
Well, believe it or not, we could still do our bit part in going green in our online business!
According to Mashable.com, here are the ten things that we could do:
1. Environmentally Friendly Web Hosting
2. Offset Your Carbon Usage
3. The 350 lbs. Project
4. Join 1% For the Planet
5. Offer Eco-Incentives to Subscribers
6. Encourage Green Lifestyle Changes
7. Simplify Your Design
8. Speed Up Your Site
9. Use Printer-Friendly Versions of Content
10. Consider Your Colors
One simple step from our end could already make a significant impact on the environment and the common social good.

Hi Elmar! This is a helpful post. As an avowed eco-friendly person, I want to do everything that I can to help save the environment. Thank you for featuring this article on mashable.com. Checking it now.
Hi Elmar,
Yes very important topic and one that we may think does not affect us because we are online.
I like those ideas from Mashable.
I would think another good one is to think twice before putting something out there that does not need to be out there. It’s so easy to have our say on the net but our words and uploaded images and videos etc are out there for good contributing to the never ending heap of information so we have a responsibility to not contributing unnecessarily to the growing pile. It’s all about quality over quantity.
Thanks for bringing this up Elmar.

Losing paper is good but to many people print things from online and our screens generate heat so we have to turn up the ac and the websites that we are on all day are super cooled then we print a document and fax it, not thats two sheets of paper the they scan it and upload it to only print it again later…wow what a rant
Hi Elmar,
Very good point! Haven’t actually thought about this in detail, but you are absolutely right, going green online helps out our environment quite a bit. I’m thinking of the old days when I faxed oodles of documents to my prospects and team members. And gosh, not to think about all the brochures I sent out. Now they can get all the information easily online.
Of course we can always do a little more to preserve our earth for out children and grandchildren.
I’m off to read the article on Mashable
Cheers,
Ilka
Hi Marcus,
The ideas are really great and that was why I was so excited to share it with all of you! But, yes, I agree with you that we should have quality-control from our end as responsible bloggers/online marketers. We should do our part in making sure that the content that we put out is something that is really of value and ,thus, not contributing to the growing pile of useless information invading the Internet.
Thanks!
Take care,
Elmar
Hi Genevieve,
Indeed, our simple action is actually a big step in saving the enviroment. Glad you dropped by and I hope you enjoy the article as much as I did
.

Hi Ilka,
Indeed, the earth is our home and we need to protect and preserve it for our children and our children’s children. If we sum it all up together, simple actions such as conserving electricity, printing less paper, etc.. can really have a big impact in our evironment. Big things come from small beginnings
.
Thanks for dropping by and have a great weekend!
Elmar
Hi David,
It’s okay to rant when you’ve made a point and feel strongly about it!
Thinking before we print anything is one of the simple things that we could do in preserving the earth. Thanks for the comment!
Take care,
Elmar
