With keyword research tools or keyword research software you will get valuable information such as the number of searches in a month, the exact search count, how many of those searches actually converted, how much competition there is on a keyword and other significant analytical information.
It would also give you a heads up for words that you have forgotten completely or synonyms you don’t know existed.
There are lots of tools out there to help you find out the measure of activity your keywords get…
My absolute personal favourite is Market Samurai.
This keyword research tool is based on “The 4 Golden Rules Of Keyword Research” and gives you a very detailed and structured way to do keyword research. These are the 4 Golden Rules :
Another keyword tool which is also very good isMicro Niche Finder. This tool is very easy to use and provides you valuable information like how strong is the competition (SOC), the measure of backlinks (MOB) as well as the commercial intent (OCI) of the keyword.
These are other great keyword tools :
- Google Adwords Keyword Tool : Google’s keyword research tool may not provide you the specific search numbers for keywords. It will show you a bar indicating an approximate number, but still this information is useful. The tool is also completely free.
- Google Suggest : Google Suggest is an excellent way to find synonyms and suggested words to help you expand y
our keyword list with more alternatives.
- Wordtracker – Free Keyword Tool : SEO your site with Wordtracker’s free keywords tool & training videos

Always remember that you’re not only checking if there are enough number of people searching for the term, you are also checking how much competition that keyword or phrase has in rankings.
Once you understood the competition, you will know how much effort you’re going to put in to rank high in that keyword.
You need to know two things:
- the number of sites competing for the keyword
- how they are faring in the rankings
(i.e. the number of sites linked to them, the number of indexed pages)
Simply said, you have to know if the word is worth pursuing and if it’s not, move on to the next.
As you test your new terms, you can use the same activity to old terms you have been targeting in your old sites. You can keep the ones that convert good while you drop the non-performers.
A common misconception in conducting keyword research to use for a search engine optimization campaign is believing that you already know the terms your prospects will use to find your web site. That’s not the case, unless you do some research in a way. You know what your site is all about and how you are to find it, simply said, but you simply can’t predict how a customer would do it.
Another misconception is that the high dollar keywords are the best for rankings, even if it’s not related to your site. Yes, you can have a lot of traffic but your customers are not there to stay.
