2 Benefits of Long-Tail Keywords

Of all the many things to write about, narrowing it down to a specific topic can really give you a headache.
The Internet is just full of words! Lots and lots of it! If I decide on a topic, it’s not enough to think of just one word or keyword.

Well, Short-Tailed Ones?
In a Marketing Hub article, here’s the difference laid out succinctly:
“Keywords can be split into two main groups, short tail keywords and long tail keywords, or broad keywords and narrow keywords. The term ‘long tail’ was coined by Chris Anderson and is used to describe the strategy of targeting less-competitive niche markets rather than the hugely competitive broad keywords. A long tail keyword is something like ‘Small Business Web Design’ while a short wail keyword is something like ‘Web Design’.
Benefiting From The Long Tail
You may be wondering why anybody would want to target hundreds or thousands of keywords which bring only small traffic. Well the answer is simply that there is less competition so you can rank on the first page of Google for long tail keywords far easier than ranking for short tail keywords. Yes, they don’t bring a lot of traffic separately but if you target lots of long tail keywords you can get lots of easy traffic. Not everybody is capable of ranking highly for highly competitive keywords but anybody(!) can rank for long tail keywords.
Another benefit of long tail keywords is that the visitors convert amazingly well to sales and ad clicks. The visitors searching for long tail keywords know exactly what they want, be it ‘Small Business Web Design’ or ‘Half Price Armani Suits’, they know exactly what they want and hopefully you can provide it to them.
One: Less Competition.
Two: Converts To Sales and Ad Clicks.
If these aren’t good reasons to use long-tail keywords, then I don’t know what is.
Don’t worry, there are free and not-really-free tools that could help you narrow down your keywords into long-tailed ones.

You nailed it by saying…”the visitors searching for long-tail keywords know exactly what they want.” While the searches for long-tailed keywords are lower they are much more targeted(less competition)and therefore, like you said, convert better.

Why fool yourself into thinking you can rank for very competitive keywords when you could actually be far more successful using long tail ones?
I have used LTK with great success and one should not be fooled by the smaller numbers associated with these.

Does Market Samurai still work as well as it used to though? I’m not convinced it does. What does everyone else think?
I agree with both the points. Long tailed keywords do rank better in search engines. The only trade off is the amount of traffic it would get. Google Adwords keyword tool is one of the many good tools to estimate the monthly traffic.

Indeed, long tail keywords rank better in the search engines.
Of course it is important that you target long tail keywords with a decent amount of traffic.
Personally I use Market Samurai for this purpose, it’s a great tool!

there are definitely lots of benefits of using the long tail keywords. Besides if you are using the wordpress, you can upload LJ Longtail SEO plugin for the long tail keywords or SEO SearchTerms Tagging 2. These tools detect search engine visits and uses this information to display a list of links based on second page search results.
