Google Plus OneDo you recall Ilka Flood of the Enlightened Networker’s article entitled,

Google Sneezed Did You Catch A Cold? Well, guess what? Google has sneezed again! And I am catching the cold.

Google recently launched its counterpart to the Facebook “like” with its very own Google +1.

Here’s how it works, as outlined in Google’s website:

The +1 button is shorthand for “this is pretty cool” or “you should check this out.” Click +1 to publicly give something your stamp of approval. Your +1’s can help friends, contacts, and others on the web find the best stuff when they search.

Sometimes it’s easier to find exactly what you’re looking for when someone you know already found it. Get recommendations for the things that interest you, right when you want them, in your search results.

The next time you’re trying to remember that bed and breakfast your buddy was raving about, or find a great charity to support, a +1 could help you out. Just make sure you’re signed in to your Google Account.

In order to +1 things, you first need a public Google profile. This helps people see who recommended that tasty recipe or great campsite. When you create a profile, it’s visible to anyone and connections with your email address can easily find it.

Your +1’s are stored in a new tab on your Google profile. You can show your +1’s tab to the world, or keep it private and just use it to personally manage the ever-expanding record of things you love around the web.”

In short, the Google +1 is some sort of validation tool that you could use among friends in your social network
. Of course, before you could take advantage of this, you have to install your Google profile first. This is such a nifty way to attract everyone already relying on the Google search engine to expand their search experience by clicking the +1 button and see who and what are highly recommended by peers. Really similar to the Facebook “like” only you are not on Facebook but on Google.

  1. Hi Ilka,

You’re very much welcome! Glad to have shed some light about Google +1. I am also in the learning process myself. This is like a new thing to explore, really. We’ll see how it goes. I’m really looking forward to see your post on it!

    Take care,
    Elmar

  2. Hi Elmer,

I’m glad to read about this. I’d heard a little about it a while ago but didn’t realize it was in action already. It seems to me that in the long term, Google may well start to use the +1 system as a factor in Search Engine Ranking.

As with the Facebook ‘like’ button, it’s a very good way to see what kind of content people are valuing and voting for.

I guess I’ll have to look into it further! Thanks for putting this info out and have a great Easter weekend!

    All the best,
    Jym

  3. Hey Jym,

Great to hear from you. Yes, Google +1 will be integrated in its search ranking algorithms. It’s something that we can look forward, but of course, lets hope it won’t get abused.

Thanks for dropping by and hope you had a great Easter weekend, too!

    Take care,
    Elmar
